Hi Ben,

Sorry, but I won't have time to look at this until late Thursday afternoon.  
But in any case, we will need for you to please also send the output from 
running "ncdump -c" on the netCDF file you are trying to read, so we can see 
the structure of the file, as in:

  ncdump -c /ptmp/lamptey/bcdata/CAM/pd.forBLamptey.cam2.h1.2000-01-01-21600.nc
