Sorry, I just cannot duplicate this. I used the branch v4.5.0-release-branch. The exact commands I executed: ./nccopy 'http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/thredds/dodsC/Datasets/ncep.reanalysis2/pressure/air.2006.nc?air[63:63][0][0:72 [0:143],time[63:63],level[0],lat[0:72],lon[0:143]' air.nc ./ncdump -h air.nc The result of the ncdump is attached. As you can see, air:units is defined.
