Here's a little more information on ncdump and alternatives:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/netcdf/docs/faq.html#converttotext
Depending on your platform, installing ncdump might be more painless
than you think. Binary distributions of netCDF that include the ncdump
utility are available for Windows, MacOS-X, and many popular Linux
distributions.
For Windows, you could use one of the prebuilt packages available here:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/netcdf/docs/winbin.html
For MacOS-X, try installing the latest version of netCDF from one of the
package management programs such as macports.org, fink, or homebrew. For
Linux, you can get netCDF from your OS repository using yum, dpkg, adept,
rpm, or others.
If you decide you need to build ncdump from source, it's usually not too
hard, and we can answer questions about how to get around problems you
may encounter.
