[netCDF #ZLT-395267]: problem installing netCDF-4.0.1 on HP-UX

Do a make distclean, then retry the configure and build with CPPFLAGS set to 
-Df2cFortran.

If that doesn't work try again with CPPFLAGS set to -DpgiFortran.
