Sorry again Robert, but I still can't read a "winmail.dat" file, which seems to 
be a windows format.

Are you building netCDF from source? Or using RPG?

Can you download the tarball and do this:

./configure > conf.out

make check > make_check.out

And then send me the files conf.out and make_check.out.

Or you can just cut and paste into your email reply.
