Let's rule out some obvious stuff first :)

Are you running 'ldmping' as user ldm? ..and is the ldm home (~ldm or 
/home/ldm) in your path?

Do you have a host defined when running 'ldmping'? i.e. ldmping 
idd.unidata.ucar.edu
