[netCDF #ZPD-675315]: Pseudonyms / symbolic links in netCDF-4 files

Unfortunately, such "aliasing" is not supported in netcdf-4.
My initial thought is that the best you can do is create an
attribute that indicates when the best variable is not be used.
If you do not write to the best variable, then it should not
allocate any significant space in the file.
