I am not sure why that check is there. It was copied over from original code by Ed Hartnett. Looking at the pnetcdf documentation, I ran across this: > Starting from 1.3.0, PnetCDF supports CDF-5 file format: > adding unsigned and 64-bit integer data types and ... It is possible that this is the source of that check.
