[netCDF #QBC-221279]: Variable name = user-defined type?

Yes, the rule is that
groups, variables, and types
may not have the same name.
If memory serves, this is inherited
from HDF5.
We recommend that type names end in '_t'
both to avoid the rule above as well
as identifying it as a type name.
