[netCDF #KLD-692686]: configure: error: Can't find or link to the szlib library

Howdy Wolfgang!

Can you try to build the latest daily snapshot release of the C library? I 
believe your problem has been fixed:
ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/snapshot/netcdf-4-daily.tar.gz
