Hi Onea,

Sorry it's taken so long to respond to your question ...

ncdump is a utility program that is installed when you build and install
netcdf software, available in source form from

  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/netcdf/

If you don't want to build and install ncdump, you can get the output for your
file from a web service such as

  http://translators.gsfc.nasa.gov/home.jsp

which lets you browse your local disk for a file to translate (in this case
the file you attached, v_egm_19990728.nc. Then you select the source format
as netCDF, the destination format as "Text Dump", press "Add File" to add it
to the list of files to translate, and hit the "Submit" button.

This will give you a page with a link to v_egm_19990728.ascii, which will be
the output you would get from ncdump, showing all the variables, as well as
their shapes, types, and values.

The ncview utility is described here:

  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/netcdf/software.html#ncview

which also shows where you can download it from and how to build it.

It creates nice 2D color plots of the fields in the netCDF file.
