The problem only occurs if everything is happening in a group. None of my tests for dimensions and coordinate variables did things inside a group, I just used the root group. ;-) I have added a new test, libsrc4/tst_files4.c, which tests that this now works. Could you please create a new datafile, using an updated netcdf library, and see if it works. Sadly, this may be a problem in the written data file, not in reading the file. That is, the problem occurred when the file was created. So you must recreate the data file, with the new version of netCDF, to see if this fix works. Do you have lots of data files like this? As you note the data are in the files are fine. But the metadata is such that netCDF-4 cannot properly associate the dimensions in the file. I have generated a snapshot release with the fix for this: ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/snapshot/netcdf-4-daily.tar.gz BTW, can you tell me what kind of science this data file is for?
