The one you have there was released some years ago, and there have been improvements to the build system that should make things easier. I recommend you get the latest release, netCDF-4.0.1: ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/netcdf-4.0.1.tar.gz Install it according to the instructions here: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/docs/netcdf-install/Quick-Instructions.html#Quick-Instructions It sounds like you don't need netCDF-4/HDF5 features, so you don't need to install HDF5 or zlib. For special instructions for the PGI compilers, see their page on how to build netCDF.
