You can use your existing zlib library. When compiling HDF5 1.8.2 (not 1.8.1!) use the --with-zlib= option to configure. When configuring netcdf-4, use --enable-netcdf-4 --with-hdf5=/somewhere --with-zlib=/somewhere/else. Let me know if this doesn't work for you. Thanks!
