Greg,

I meant to mention one other development that is needed for dealing with
chunk sizes.  I'm adding an option to ncdump, which should be ready in the
snapshot next week, that will display the chunk sizes for each variable in
a file (as well as compression level and a few other per-variable settings).

I'll let you know when it's available.
