OK, but the fact remains that 4.3 is a stage 1 release (i.e. not stable, not 
complete).

It is bleeding edge, and it is perhaps not surprising that is causes problems 
for netCDF.

Is it not possible for you to get a current stable release of gcc/gfortran?
