As for your ncdump changes, they are more fundamental. Why did you say that you 
can see arguments for not applying this patch? What arguments?

It actually looks like a good idea to me. But ncdump is Russ's baby, so I will 
discuss it with him and see what he thinks...

What in the world are you doing with so many dimensions?

Are the dimension id's having problems with being negative above 32K?
