Rather than using that patch, please try:

  ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/netcdf-3.5.1-beta5.tar.Z

If that doesn't work, please send details, as requested at the end of
the INSTALL document at:

  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/INSTALL.html#ReportingProblems
