OK, I see it, thanks.  I was grepping for the "-D`cat VERSION`" you
referred to in your message, rather than "-DVERSION=`cat ../VERSION`".

I'm still not sure where your "ucar netcdf 3.5" version came from.  We
still have not released version 3.5; the latest version available is
3.5beta3.  Maybe an earlier beta release just didn't have the VERSION
string right ...
