Also it would be useful to know the value of the environment variables you set for configure, telling it what compilers to use. At the end of the INSTALL file, there is a list of the information we need to diagnose problems with building netCDF. We can't duplicate the problem you are seeing here if you are really using SunOS 4.1.4 (that would be a very old version). Is the version really SunOS 4.4.1? By the way, if you only need the C interface to netCDF but don't need the Fortran interface, you can get around the above problem by not building the Fortran interface.
