Larry,

Another user reported successfully building netCDF on Linux with
pgf90, but had to use a more recent version of "cfortran.h" than is in
the netCDF 3.4 version.  The details are at:

including a link to a message that includes the newer cfortran.h file.

Alternatively, you could try building the library from the netCDF 3.5
alpha release containing the new cfortran.h file, by getting

  ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/netcdf-3.5-alpha.tar.Z

I'm not sure the new cfortran.h will make the unsatisfied external
message about "_fxstat" go away, but at least two users have reported
success with this combination.
