It turns out that the bug is actually in the "ncgen" utility program built with IRIX 6.2. ncdump works fine but the ncdump test used ncgen and uncovered this problem. So you can use the "ncdump" you built with confidence, but the ncgen does not properly interpret missing values, represented by "_" when built under IRIX 6.2.
