You could try using the contributed package "ncrename" by Charlie Zender,
available from

        ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/contrib/ncrename-1.3.tar.gz

Also try using the netcdf-2.4 beta release, if you aren't already.

Yes, I'm planning on it, though I won't get to preparing for it until
