Bill,
>The ./mcunpack command is not found.
Did you CD to the ~mcidas/mcidas7.8/update directory and do the
download to it? This is the directory where mcunpack is located in the
Unidata McIDAS-X distribution.
Note: the mcupdate.tar.Z file expects that you will be in the
~mcidas/mcidas7.8/update directory when it is unpacked. The reason for
this is that all files in the tarball have relative directory
references like ../src/makefile, ../data/VERSION.TXT. If you are not
in the ~mcidas/mcidas7.8/update directory when you unpack
mcupdate.tar.Z, the code will not bet put into the proper directories.
If, for some reason, your ~mcidas/mcidas7.8/update directory does not
have mcunpack in it, you can FTP it from the same directory that
you grabbed mcupdate.tar.Z:
3a) FTP the addendum unpacker to your machine and unpack it:
ftp ftp.unidata.ucar.edu
<user> umcidas
<pass> XXXXXX
cd unix/780/bugfix
binary
get mcunpack
quit
chmod +x mcunpack
./mcunpack
>Should I continue with doing a gunzip and tar -xvf... ?
It is best to use the unpack script, mcunpack especially if the OS
running on your machine is Linux.
