That's the easy part... GetHostByName and an appropriate ping and 
response.  ICMP's useful for some things, as long as you don't depend on 
it for latency calculations...

So do I, but I wanted to get a 2nd opinion.  I'll go harass the admin 
for ldm.renci.org.

If this persists, I may walk over to your office and ask if you'll join 
me on a conference call to RENCI...  I'm in town this week for the GIS 
conference.
