Greetings Joris, I'm sorry to hear the bad news. The last suggestion I have is to move the .unidata/ folder (in your home directory) to something like .unidata_old/ and start the IDV - it could be the case that something inside of that folder has become corrupt. Please let me know if that fixes the issue.
