Gilbert, Any chance you'll have gigabit connections to your LDM server, and if so, can you support large MTU (jumbo frames)? We've been experimenting with a 9000 byte MTU and we'd like to do end-to-end bandwith testing with a few geographically distributed sites when possible.
I just got the definitive ord today...it would cost minimum $50,000 to $100,000 to get the connection at this time. No way does my boss have that kind of $$$$ right now, unfortunately. Read on...Herb Kuryliw is our Senior Network Architect.

I cannot verify that until someone gets back from vacation but I am about 90% certain that is correct. As you mention in reply to this E-Mail it is the gigabit connection to you in Davis that is the issue. Our model for deploying Gigabit to research initiatives will be to work with them to determine their needs and give a cost as to what it will take to make that upgrade. So pretty much full cost of installation and maintenance would be on you if that is what you want. The assessment also includes what your needs would be over the I2 and what/if we need to upgrade to make that happen. Just guess off the top of my head we would be talking around the $50K mark that would include the connection upgrades and maintenance for 5 years. That is an extremely rough estimate but certainly would not see it going over $100K. To explain that a little, we did things a little backwards at this University for I2. Typically the research community would get the money, justify and build the I2 connection. Since no one really had the ability to do that other than ITS, we did this connection out of our budget to create a catalyst to begin using research dollars for its continued support. I am trying to work as the go between for that initiative in a hope to build a better future for NIU and eventually research dollars expanding to bigger and better things.
