The problem appears to be in my .cshrc file where I have the following: setenv XUSERFILESEARCHPATH ~/.app-defaults/%N This is resetting the nawips value. Not sure why I have it there but it certainly dates back many years when I found I needed it for...something. Can't remember why anymore. Removing it solves the problem.
