James,

No, you can't redefine the maximum number of grids in an existing file
since the header block and pointers are already allocated.

You can create a new grid file using GDCFIL with CPYFIL and MAXGRD
to your old file and the new number of grids respectively, then
use GDMOD to transfer the grids to the new file.
