What happened exactly when you just ran ./awips_install.sh --cave? If sudo doesn't work I believe you should be able to change to root and run it as root. To do this type su, then you'll need to enter the password for the root user that you set up when you made the VM. Then you'll need to go back into the proper downloads directory by typing cd ~bmarshall/Downloads. Then you can just run ./awips_install.sh --cave Let me know how that goes.
