I'm glad you got it working.

Because the CFLAGS environment variable overrides any determination by the 
configure(1) script (for the need for the "-fPIC" option, for example), it's 
possible that the CFLAGS environment variable was set before you executed the 
configure(1) script the first time and that setting didn't include the "-fPIC" 
option.  That's a speculation on my part, but it's consistent with the observed 
behavior.
