This is a bug in the OPeNDAP page for any parameters that have a - in them, ie 
U-component_of_wind_height_above_ground.

Until a fix can be put on motherlode, you can use the workaround by modifying 
the DataUrl for the parameter:

http://motherlode.ucar.edu:8080/thredds/dodsC/fmrc/NCEP/GFS/Global_0p5deg/runs/NCEP-GFS-Global_0p5deg_RUN_2010-03-31T06:00:00Z?U-component_of_wind_height_above_ground[0:1:0][0:1:0][0:1:0]
