Tor, Sorry for the long delay in responding, the Grib package was being refactored. One can now use the name instead of the description in the netcdf-java 4.0 release. There a routine: GridIndexToNC.setUseDescriptionForVariableName( boolean ); The refactor methods are now in iosp/grid, most of the iosp/grib are being deprecated. Hope this helps, Robb...
