Hi Tim:

The Netcdf server knows how to transform lat/lon to indices, using the data 
projection.

For opendap, you must compute the indices yourself, and your formula assumes 
its a lat/lon grid, which it isnt. 

So the problem is that the opendap server does not do any magic "behind the 
scene".
