Hi Jack, 

You have installed the ldm as root..this is bad.

Please see:

http://my.unidata.ucar.edu/content/software/ldm/index.html

for instructions on how and who needs to own what files.

I am quite confident that this is also leading to the logging problem.

This is how the ownerships and permissions should be set:

Notice only two files should be owned by root, and these are in the bin
dir.

I suggest rebuilding, but that is, of course, your choice.
