Hello again,
As many of you have already seen, these changes were delayed from their original timelines but took effect for GOES-16 yesterday at 18Z.
A few important notes about these changes:
- GOES-West implementation is scheduled for January 4th (no time listed)
- These changes for both GOES-East AND GOES-West will temporarily be rolled back between Jan. 31 and Mar. 6
- On or about March 6th, these changes will be "reinstated permanently."
The justification for these changes remains the same, essentially that removal of these products will reduce the bandwidth used on NOAAPort/SBN. However, for those needing Southern Hemispheric GOES imagery there are a few options:
- ADDE feeds: Unidata makes available the full resolution Full-Disk imagery over the ADDE feeds EAST/EASTALL and WEST/WESTALL.
- IDD feeds:
- Unidata also makes available the full resolution Full-Disk imagery on the SATELLITE (formerly DIFAX) IDD feed. Details, including example pattern-actions, can be found here: https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/data/goesr.html
- Additional Full-Disk imagery is available on the UNIWISC feed. The difference here is bands 2, 8 and 13 (and only those bands) have been rescaled to 4km; finer than SBN's 6km resolution but coarser than full resolution (500m, 2km and 2km respectively). This may be a good compromise for those seeking S.Hemi data while needing to conserve bandwidth. Details on the UNIWISC feed can be found here: https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/data/uniwisc.html
- As noted in the above SCN, additional sources of GOES data may be found in the below links:
These are no doubt impactful changes and the details can be confusing. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Best,
-Mike
