Hi Evan, Sorry it has taken so long to respond to your question. Because netCDF-4 depends on features of HDF5 added in the 1.8 release, there is no way to build netCDF-4 from source based on the HDF5-1.6.x libraries, as far as I know. Your suggested approach of using sharable libraries with IDL and MATLAB probably won't work either, because of changes to the HDF5 interface between version 1.6 and 1.8.
