[netCDF #KMU-404361]: netCDF General - NetCDF representation of a "structured grid"

Hi Stu,

There are multiple ways to represent such grids in netCDF, so what you really 
need is a convention.  For example, the CF Conventions 1.0 has a section on 
Grid Mappings and Projections:

that shows one agreed upon method for representing multidimensional grid 
mappings, and there is also an appendix to the CF conventions that gives more 
specific examples of grid mappings based on projections.  See also the example 
in section 5.2 of the CF conventions for how to handle coordinates and 
coordinate systems that are not defined by a projection.

Work is underway to extend the CF conventions to handle unstructured grids and 
meshes.  If the current CF conventions version 1.0 is not sufficient for your 
needs, it may be covered by one of the new conventions being proposed.  For
