Howdy Richard!

Sorry it's taken so long for me to reply concerning your netCDF install 
question. Is it
possible that your machine does not have a F90 compiler?

Try using the --disable-f90 option with configure:

make distclean && ./configure --disable-f90 && make test

You should also try the latest beta version:

ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/netcdf-beta.tar.gz
