Hi Merrill,

Please try the netCDF beta version instead, which has some fixes for
adapting the C++ interface to more recent C++ standards:

  ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/netcdf-3.5.1-beta10.tar.Z

Please let us know if this doesn't work. Meanwhile, I'm checking
whether we have a Portland Group C++ compiler we can use for testing
and reproducing these kind of problems.
