FAN was written by Harvey Davies from CSIRO, and he recently decided to drop FAN maintenance and develop a different package instead called "CAPS" using TCL. According to Harvey, this may eventually handle netCDF files as well, but currently handles only the kinds of files he is working with, mostly AVHRR imagery represented in HDF. It's hard to make any general statement about the support of netCDF utilities, except that the list of utilities that can display or manipulate netCDF data listed at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/software.html is still growing. I add new entries as I hear about them and periodically delete entries that are no longer available. The new pure Java netCDF interface makes me confident that users will continue to use netCDF data and develop utilities for this form of data. We have no plans to drop support for netCDF, and we continue to provide support and backward compatibility for netCDF programs written 10 years ago. --Russ _____________________________________________________________________ Russ Rew UCAR Unidata Program address@hidden http://www.unidata.ucar.edu
