This indicates you are using a fairly old version of netCDF, from 1993,
before Linux was available.  Instead, try the current release, version
2.4.3, available as file "netcdf.tar.Z" which is just a symbolic link to
"netcdf-2.4.3.tar.Z" in the directory

   ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/netcdf/
