Thanks for your advice.  I performed the configure
exactly as you described (after the patches) but
still no luck.  So...I checked the version of
the 'patch' program I was using, and it was 2.0.2.0
from 90/05/01.  I compiled a more recent version
(2.1) and reapplied the patches.   

All is well...will do testing today.
