Re: OPeNDAP question

Hi Cathy:

ncdump isnt giving you a file, its just giving you a "view" of the remote file. Not sure why it says "classic", but its a good guess in that opendap can only handle classic model files. Really the -k output isnt meaningful for a remote dataset.

Chris K. is out so I'd thought I'd ask you. We have been converting files to netCDF4-classic format to save space and also to avoid scale/offset packing.
If you do the following, you get different results:

ncdump -k
http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/thredds/dodsC/Datasets/noaa.ersst/sst.mnmean.nc
gives

classic

but the local file

ncdump -k /Datasets/noaa.ersst/sst.mnmean.nc

gives

netCDF-4 classic model

Why is the OPeNDAP netcdf output netCDF3? We might suggest people who have trouble upgrading netCDF (e.g. their sysadmins haven't) use the opendap URL but we were surprised it was netCDF3. Note for the opendap URL, ncdump has

                sst:_ChunkSize = 1, 89, 180 ;

so it's clearly using the right file.

Thanks
Cathy
