[McIDAS #DYC-159086]: satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov server trouble

Hi Carl,

satepsanone is making its imagery available via a McIDAS-X ADDE server.
A "feature" of ADDE is the ability to create dataset definitions (e.g.,
PUB/MTG, etc.) that have no content. This allows for the creation of
a dataset that is to be populated at a later date. The downside of this
is the end user will get an unexpected error when trying to list/display
an image from an empty dataset. For instance, see what happens when
trying to list the contents of the defined PUB/LI-EC dataset in
McIDAS-X from satepsanone:

IMGLIST PUB/LI-EC
Image file directory listing for:PUB/LI-EC
IMGLIST: No images satisfy the selection criteria
IMGLIST: done
IMGLIST failed, RC=2

The McIDAS-X DSINFO command can be used to list the ADDE dataset definitions
for an ADDE group. For instance:

DATALOC LIST PUB

Group Name Server IP Address
-------------------- ----------------------------------------
PUB SATEPSANONE.NESDIS.NOAA.GOV

<LOCAL-DATA> indicates that data will be accessed from the local data directory.

As you can see from this listing, satepsanone no longer has dataset
defintions for the MTG. MTN, or GPFDSK datasets. This explains the
error one would get when trying to list images in any of them. For
instance:

IMGLIST PUB/MTG
Image file directory listing for:PUB/MTG
IMGLIST: Image directory server unable to resolve this dataset: PUB/MTG
IMGLIST: done
IMGLIST failed, RC=2

re:
> What
> is the proper set I should go to on the server for that region?

Please remember that we (Unidata) do not maintain the ADDE server on
satepsanone, so we are not the definitive source for information about
what is or should be in any of the datasets it hosts.

In the past, the answer to your question would have been to look at
any of the MTSAT-based datasets:

MTGLOB01V 48
MTGLOB02V 48
MTGLOB04I2 48
MTGLOB04I3 48
MTGLOB04I4 48
MTGLOB04I5 48
MTNHEM01V 48
MTNHEM04I2 48
MTNHEM04I3 48
MTNHEM04I4 48
MTNHEM04I5 48

Unfortunately, this is no longer the case as MTSAT was replaced
by Himawari by the JMA, and, even more unfortunately, NESDIS has
decided to not host Himawari images on satepsanone (there were
very good reasons for this decision - satepsanone is running
AIX, and AIX is no longer a supported platform for McIDAS-X.
Moreover, this machine is pretty old now, and doesn't have the
horsepower or disk space to host the data from Himawari).

The only images that we make available that covers the region
you are interested in are the global thermal infrared and
water vapor composites that we make available in the RTIMAGES
dataset on a variety of ADDE servers (e.g., adde.ucar.edu,
atm.ucar.edu, adde.ssec.wisc.edu, lead.unidata.ucar.edu).

For instance:

DATALOC LIST RTIMAGES

Group Name Server IP Address
-------------------- ----------------------------------------
RTIMAGES ADDE.UCAR.EDU

<LOCAL-DATA> indicates that data will be accessed from the local data directory.

The only downsides of these images are that they are only available
every three hours, and they have lower resolution than many users would
like. At the same time, however, they are very useful for creating
fantastic displays especially in the IDV where one can load them in the
globe display.

No worries, and the best of luck with your studies!

Cheers,
