[McIDAS #MET-935016]: McIDAS - Cannot get mcunpack to execute -- keep getting message to define McINST_ROOT

I am able to ssh to your machine (72.148.224.143) as 'mcidas', but
I am not able to do much.  Every time I tried to run a program, the
connection would freeze-up.  For instance, I wanted to edit 
/home/mcidas/.bashrc,
but when I tried running:

vi .bashrc

The connection would freeze.

The connection would also freeze when trying any/all of the following:

env
cat mcunpack
ls /usr/local/bin
ls -alt /tmp
etc.

I am not sure what is causing this, but I suspect it might have something
to do with read/write permissions on /tmp (just a wild guess).

Each time the SSH connection hung, I was forced to kill 'ssh' on my
machine and try again.

You say that your IT helper from school got SSH working.  Perhaps
s/he can do a bit more troubleshooting to figure out why my connections
are freezing.

Got that information also.  The last hurdle is figuring out why my
SSH connections freeze when trying to do anyting that outputs anything
significant back to my terminal.
