Hi Owen,

re:

>Air Research.

I _AM_ envious!!!

>slow. Is there any problem with me installing Mcidas on a machine at the
>institue in Norway?

There should be no problem. Over the years we have gotten specific
permission from the director of SSEC (Bob Fox at the time) for users to
install McIDAS on machines outside of their domain when they are on
sabbatical, etc. Even though Bob is no longer the director of SSEC, I
am sure that his guidance on matters like this still holds, so you can
install McIDAS for your research on a suitable machine at the Norwegian
Institute for Air Research.

My conversations with Bob were focused on situtations exactly like the
one you are now describing. Please feel free to use McIDAS on your
sabbatical (junket ;-). If folks at the Norwegian Institute for Air
Research are interested in McIDAS, they will need to contact SSEC to
get licensed for its use _unless_ they have a degree granting component
as one of their primary activities. In that case, they might be
allowed to use Unidata McIDAS, but that would need to be explored
if/when the time comes.

>I won't need an LDM, as I would just bring archived Mcidas data with me
>from the USA on DVDs.

OK, sounds good.

>Please let me know what you think

I think there is no problem.

I just looked at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research's web page...
which location are you going to?

Also, I see that they are involved in a project with Vietnam. We are
supplying realtime data through the IDD to the National Institute
for Meteorology and Hydrology in Hanoi. I wonder if the NILU (their
acronym) has dealings with that group?

P.S. Can I stowaway in your luggage ;-)

Cheers,

Tom
