>From: Virat Chatdarong <address@hidden> >Organization: MIT >Keywords: 200407192005.i6JK5iaW016033 McIDAS-X Windows XP Virat, >My name is Virat Chatdarong, a Ph.D. student at Parsons Lab, MIT. I would >like to download McIDAS for Windows XP and would like to know if you plan >to support Windows XP in the future? Yes, we will make the SSEC version of McIDAS-X for Windows XP available. >My research will need GOES data to >analyse rainfall and my office-mate gave me an account to Unidata McIDAS >ftp site (ftp.unidata.ucar.edu). However, it doesn't have any McIDAS for >windows XP there. (I believe you only have the UNIX 2004.) I hadn't downloaded the SSEC XP distribution yet, but I have now. The McIDAS v2004 documentation on the Unidata web site is in its final stages of preparation. I had hoped to announce the v2004 release by now, but I still have a few things to attend to before I can make it. >Please let me know what do I have to do to get the McIDAS program for >Windows XP The SSEC v2004 distribution of Windows XP is now in the passworded McIDAS FTP account on ftp.unidata.ucar.edu. The distribution consists of 10 files: README mcidas.profile mcidas.mcenv mcinet2004.sh mcidas2004.sp mcidas2004.sh mcidas2004.tar.gz MAY04PRG.TXT MAY04OPN.TXT MAY04INQ.TXT Please be advised that McIDAS-X for XP does not run in a standalone mode under Windows. Here are the comments from the SSEC web page regarding McIDAS-X on Windows XP: "You must be running Services For Unix 3.5 or greater in order to run McIDAS-X for XP version 2004. Windows Services for Unix 3.5 is available for free at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads" "We do not have a specific X server that we recommend. We have tried many X servers, but have encountered problems, especially when cutting and pasting, with all of them. Some work better than others; at SSEC, many people use Exceed 6.1.1, X-Win 32 5.4 or MicroImages 4.2.1." Also, please be advised that the McIDAS distribution for Windows XP does not have any of the applications that we (the Unidata Program Center) add for the Unix distribution. Given this, there may be some program pages in the Unidata McIDAS-X Users Guide that do not pertain to the software that you will be using. >and how to acquire GOES data. There are a number of sites that make the GOES-East and GOES-West data sent in the Unidata IDD UNIWISC (Unidata-Wisconsin) datastream available through remote ADDE servers. The list of those sites can be found in: http://my.unidata.ucar.edu/content/software/mcidas/adde_servers.html If you are looking for higher resolution, real-time GOES data, we are working on establishing ADDE server sites that will make it available. We will announce to the Unidata community when the sites are ready. Until then, getting the data off of the sites listed in the URL above will have to suffice. >I'm looking forward to hearing from you. >Thank you very much in advance.
