SUNY Stony Brook wrote some IDL code to read McIDAS satellite imagery a few years back. I can check the McIDAS Support Email archives on Monday to see if they give me a clue as to where to find the code that they provided me. Again, this was several years ago, so it may be hard to find the code. The other possibility is the ABoM: they were doing a lot with IDL a couple of years back, and I am pretty sure that they were displaying images in McIDAS AREA format. Like Don said, Liam Gumley (address@hidden) may know this answer right off: he wrote a book on how to use IDL and a number of scientists in SSEC use IDL with McIDAS imagery data files.
