Peter,
If you're having to run the portmapper daemon in order for the LDM system to
work, then I suspect that the LDM server isn't getting its well-known port,
388. This could be because the LDM server program, bin/ldmd, isn't owned by
"root" and setuid.
What is the output of the command
ls -l bin/ldmd bin/hupsyslog
executed by the LDM user in their home-directory?
